Honourable Colonial Secretary.

We have examined the plans of the New Law Courts, and are agreed that it is desirable that the proposed position of the building should be reversed, the East elevation being turned to the West and the West to the East.

The proposed East elevation is undoubtedly intended by the Architect for the principal front and should therefore face the garden and the Queen's statue, and on this side should be the public entrances.

This change will place the principal offices, namely those of the Chief Justice and Puisne Judge, The Attorney General and the Crown Solicitor on the East overlooking the Cricket ground. The Easterly aspect in Hong Kong is the best, especially when as in this case there are no verandahs.

We agree with the Director of Public Works in paragraph 4 of the memorandum which he has prepared for the Architects, that some alterations in detail in the fittings of the court will probably be found desirable, and can be arranged for locally.

We also considered the question of closets and lavatory fittings, and decided that the number of water closets proposed in paragraph 8 of the Director of Public Works memorandum might with advantage be reduced by one. The other fittings to be as proposed.
